Course 3
Creating your own projects with AI

Unit 1 – Coding with AI

Lesson 3: Installing and using co-pilot

In the last lesson you learnt how to use a chatbot like a coding helper. This has become a popular way to use AI while coding, and major software companies have developed ways to do this which are used by professional programmers across the world.

The important thing to remember, as with any AI, is that the results of AI can be wrong. AI programs usually seem very confident in their answers, but this is just a result of how they have been programmed. You should always check and test the answers, especially is it concerns security and safety issues.

You can install an AI helper to work with you on coding projects. The most popular is called Co-Pilot, developed by GitHub. This works as an extension to programs that you can download to write code. Co-Pilot is a paid service, but if you are ready to take your coding skills to the next level you can try out for yourself.

First download an “IDE” (Integrated Development Environment) program to write your code. A free and popular example is VSCode.

Then go to GitHub Co-Pilot, sign up for the service, and follow the instructions to install Co-Pilot onto your computer. Copilot is free for students, and has a monthly fee for individuals.

If you get stuck, you can always ask a chatbot for help!
