Course 3
Making a “Photostream” social app

Create a working app prototype where you can see and upload photos from you and your friends.

Make sure that you have completed the first 2 courses before starting this course. You may also skip to the next course if you prefer.

Unit 1 – Choosing an idea

If you have completed the previous two courses, you will now have a good understanding of how Adalo screens, components and collections can combine to create interesting apps. In this course we will expand on your skills to create an app that has many functional parts and that uses many different features of Adalo to create a feature-rich app.

The point of this course is to create an app where users can see posts from other people. In our previous courses, the app was designed to only show you what you have created. Some of the most popular apps in the world are social media apps - apps that allow you to communicate with other people through the app. These apps can be fun, useful and engaging.

Recently people have started to question how to make sure the things that users see on social media are true and respectful. Thinking about ways to make sure all users can engage with the app in the way that they want is an important question when you are designing an app. Apps should be interesting and engaging, but you should make sure that your users are safe from untrustworthy content on your app.

This course will follow parts of an Adalo App Academy lesson, which will create your own version of the Instagram app. If you’re not familiar with the Instagram app, it is an app that was started to allow users to share photos with each other. Since it started, it has grown to include many new features. For your app, you can decide which features you want to include, and if you want to create features that don’t exist on Instagram.

Take some time before you move onto the next lesson and write down some ideas that you would want to see in your own social media app. Think about:

  • What your users are sharing with each other. It can be photos and videos, or it could be short stories, audio clips, memories, or art ideas.

  • How your users will find other people on your app. Will your users have to know someone else’s phone number, or can they meet each other through your app?

  • What rules you should have about the things users can share on the app. Will you ban certain words? Will users have to agree to the rules?

  • What sort of style do you want your app to have? It could be a more serious style, which could have more muted colors and language. Or it could be a variety of colors and fonts, like a celebration or party.

  • Write down anything else that feels relevant, and keep your notes safely so that you can refer back to them later.
