Course 4
Using AI with maker industries

Unit 2 – Coding apps, web pages and devices

Lesson 2: Using an AI assistant to help you build

In this lesson we will ask an AI chatbot to help us throughout the project. We will use the fact that chatbots hold information about your prompts as you chat to build quickly and efficiently.

Start a new chat with your favourite AI chatbot.

As a reminder, here are some options:

ChatGPT

Bard

Perplexity

Construct your first prompt carefully, by adding details about the project that you want to complete and the type of responses that you want. For example:

I am starting a new hobby project with the Raspberry Pi. I don’t have very much experience with the Raspberry Pi so I would like you to help and advise me on this project. Can you keep your responses appropriate for a beginner who doesn’t have much coding experience. Can you tell me the important things I should consider when starting this project.

Continue by using the chatbot as your personal coach. You can make sure that you are heading in the right direction by checking outputs from the bot that you’re not sure are correct. You can ask your tutor, a search engine and people in your group for reassurance that you’re doing the right steps.

Here are some useful prompts to use in your building process:

Please explain the ...... part of your last response, using a simple example to help me understand.

The .... isn't working correctly for me, can you explain that part in more detail?

I'm struggling to understand .... Can you explain it with a simple analogy?

Can you tell me some pitfalls that I could encounter when doing this part?

All being well, you will learn and develop the project that you wanted with the chatbot as your helper. Keep checking in with your tutor and course mates to help you stay focussed and confident in your learning.

AI chatbots can be a useful tool for learning and making at innovation hubs. The way that these bots can use their training data means that it can help you learn creation, design and making processes more easily and more quickly.

As ever, we should remember that AI isn’t perfect, and that we should do the work to ensure the things we take from AI are safe and secure. This is where other humans in our hub groups and community can help. Knowing when to use AI and when to work with other people will be an important skill to develop as AI becomes a bigger and more feature-rich part of our lives.

Congratulations on completing this course. You should now feel confident in learning new AI features as they are released, and confident that you have a good understanding of the dangers of AI and how to spot them.
